The National Research Council Canada (NRC) and the U.K. Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult (OREC) have jointly initiated a project to develop and pursue industry-focused collaborative research projects with U.K. and Canadian research organizations and SMEs in three areas:
A workshop is planned for St. John’s on January 18, 2019. Participants will have the opportunity to make connections with experts in both countries, leading to fruitful long-term collaborations and helping ensure that barriers and challenges faced by the industry are prioritized and addressed through collaborative research.
The collaborative research projects will aim to help industry to improve performance and reliability while reducing the costs and risks of offshore renewable energy technologies and projects. This initiative is focusing on seabed mounted and floating tidal sectors and offshore wind and floating offshore wind sectors. Advances in autonomous and artificial intelligence technologies may be applicable to both the offshore renewable energy and oil & gas sectors.
By the end of March 2019, the aim is to have a bilateral MOU that presents a plan for long-term trans-Atlantic research and development collaboration. Outputs include a schedule of at least five business-focused applied research project proposals; establishing strong technical links between both countries; sharing of knowledge, processes, products and sector experiences; and opportunities for U.K. and Canadian SMEs to link with the experts and make connections leading to fruitful longer-term collaborations. U.K. participants include the Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult, European Marine Energy Centre and several U.K. SMEs.
