WEBINAR: Assessing the costs and benefits of adaptation to climate change at mine sites in Canada

NOTE: This opportunity has expired or is an event which has already taken place.

Economic Impacts of a Changing Climate on Mine Sites in Canada: Assessing Proactive Adaptation Investments against Estimated Reactive Costs
Susan McGeachie and Luke Baer, Ernst & Young LLP

This webinar will present the results of a project that studied the economic impact of climate change on mining operations and reclamation in Canada. The project created a modelling tool to assess the costs and benefits of investing in adaptation measures today, versus responding to impacts when their effects are realized. Results of applying the modelling tool to do this assessment for four mine sites in northern and southern regions of the provinces of Ontario and Quebec will be presented. The results demonstrate that the modelling tool can usefully assist managers to prioritize those mine sites with greater risk of climate change impacts, and to determine the financial viability of potential investments in adaptation measures. The webinar will also include a brief discussion of the applicability of the modelling tool to other sectors, such as energy and transportation infrastructure.
