Transportation in Life, Work and Play: The Movement of People To, From and Within Atlantic Canada
NOTE: This opportunity has expired or is an event which has already taken place.

Afternoon and evening of Tuesday, May 19, and all day Wednesday, May 20, 2015
Holiday Inn, St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador
People spend an increasing amount of time, energy and money in getting from one place to another, whether in their daily commute to work, in long-distance commuting, or for recreation, education, healthcare or other reasons. But the economic, demographic and technological patterns that existed when our transportation systems were designed were quite different from today’s. As a result, the systems built decades ago are no longer capable of meeting today’s needs.
This day-and-a-half conference will look at how we can adapt and enhance the transportation systems within Atlantic Canada to improve the experience of people who travel to, from and within the region. The focus will be on governance, innovation and technology; on economic, social and environmental policy; and on social equity. The main outcome of the conference will be a series of practical policy recommendations to all levels of government.
The conference will be of interest to people working in all three levels of government (federal, provincial, and municipal); non-governmental organizations in the economic, social and environmental sectors; air, land and marine transportation carriers; port and airport authorities; commuters’ or consumers’ advocacy groups; champions of the sharing economy; champions of intelligent transportation systems; poverty and social equity groups; and post-secondary educational institutions.
The conference is organized by Memorial University of Newfoundland’s Leslie Harris Centre of Regional Policy and Development, within the framework of the annual Atlantic Provinces Transportation Forums.
The conference will focus on 4 main themes:
- Economic and Policy Aspects of Transportation
- Atlantic Canada in the Global Economy
- Transportation for Life, Work and Play
- Social and Equity Aspects of Transportation
