RDC’s 2015 RISE awards offer high school students exceptional opportunities to pursue R&D

NOTE: This opportunity has expired or is an event which has already taken place.

The Research & Development Corporation (RDC) is accepting applications for the 4th annual Research Inspired Student Enrichment (RISE) awards competition starting today. RISE awards provide Level II students in Newfoundland and Labrador with the opportunity to participate in research-related enrichment programs in Canada and the US. The awards range in value from $7,000 to $13,000 and are open to students who demonstrate academic excellence in science, technology, engineering and mathematics, and who will be completing Level II by June 2015.

RISE award winners will attend one of four enrichment programs: the Research Science Institute (RSI) based at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), the Summer Science Immersion program at the Deep River Science Academy in Ontario, the Da Vinci Engineering Enrichment Program (DEEP) at the University of Toronto, and Students on Ice (SOI), which takes students and researchers on a ship-and land-based journey through the Arctic.

“The RISE Awards give our best and brightest high school students the opportunity to work closely with top scientists, researchers and teachers on real R&D projects. I’m confident that this program is helping cultivate a new generation of R&D leaders and contributing to a stronger culture of innovation in the province,” said Glenn Janes, CEO of RDC.

In the first three years of the program, RDC has provided 38 RISE awards to Newfoundland and Labrador high school students. RDC encourages principals, teachers, parents and guardians to identify these high-achieving students and encourage them to apply. A RISE award provides a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and an experience that could significantly contribute to a student’s future career.
