NL firm in running for $100,000 prize from BDC for plan to support sustainable provincial food system

About the Contest

The BDC Young Entrepreneur Award contest rewards Canadian entrepreneurs aged 18 to 35 whose company has reached a turning point and who propose innovative solutions to ensure their company’s growth. The grand prize is an award of $100,000 to implement the project.

About the Project

St. John’s Real Food Market is tackling obesity and poor health one customer at a time. The city’s first store and delivery service for organic, local and healthy foods launched two years ago with a home delivery service. Today, 90% of its business comes from its brick-and-mortar store, where it offers fresh organic produce, organic and grass-fed meats, wild fish, vegan and vegetarian foods, and gluten-free options, as well as natural personal and household products. However, with Newfoundland and Labrador’s short growing season and the costly logistical challenges of shipping from the mainland, sourcing fresh produce year-round remains a challenge. Winning the BDC Young Entrepreneur Award $100,000 grand prize would allow Real Food to engage in a multi-step effort to create a sustainable food system on the island that will include investing in local greenhouse operations for year-round vegetable production.
