LAST CHANCE: JOB OPPORTUNITY – Climate Services Specialist

Background

Climate change is one of the greatest long-term challenges facing the world today. The science is clear and unambiguous: climate change is happening. Climate change and other associated environmental effects are impacting human and ecosystem health, as well as sectors with obvious climate sensitivities such as forestry, agriculture, fisheries, hydroelectricity, transportation, tourism, insurance, and trade.

The Newfoundland and Labrador Environmental Industry Association (NEIA) is seeking a Climate Services Specialist to join its growing team and help decision-makers in this province understand and address climate change.

NEIA is a not-for-profit association of businesses that promotes the development of clean technology and the growth of the green economy in Newfoundland and Labrador. With over 200 members, NEIA is Newfoundland and Labrador’s premier resource for the environmental sector, offering a diverse range of expert knowledge and support services for firms and organizations working to grow economic opportunity while respecting our natural environment.

Job Description

NEIA’s Climate Services Specialist will engage with a variety of stakeholders within Newfoundland and Labrador to provide information and guidance with respect to climate change data, climate change adaptation tools, best practices, and training. The Climate Services Specialist will help stakeholders identify and explore relevant opportunities to address climate change specific to their circumstances.

These stakeholders will include municipalities, government agencies, industry associations, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), researchers, academia, and Indigenous groups. The Climate Services Specialist will support these stakeholders in their adaptation planning efforts that include conducting their climate change vulnerability assessments and developing their climate change adaptation plans – while also providing support and services to other sectors engaged in adaptation.

The Climate Services Specialist will also serve as Newfoundland and Labrador’s representative for CLIMAtlantic – Atlantic Canada’s climate services centre. This is a new organization responsible for providing climate data and services to Atlantic Canadians and the variety of stakeholders and sectors outlined above.

The Climate Services Specialist will be the province’s key contact with the Executive Director of CLIMAtlantic and share and communicate Newfoundland and Labrador’s needs with respect to climate services and ultimately deliver climate data and tools, educational and awareness services, training, and guidance, to stakeholders across the province on the centre’s behalf.

The Climate Services Specialist will be situated in a dynamic modern work environment in St. John’s that features professionals from a number of organizations working to enhance Newfoundland and Labrador’s economy and environment. While the Climate Services Specialist will be required to work in the office on some days, there is a degree of flexibility which will allow for remote working.

Qualifications

There are a number of qualifications that are deemed a requirement for the Climate Services Specialist position. The Climate Service Specialist must possess:

  • A university degree in a STEM-related field (e.g. environmental sciences, planning, engineering);
  • Demonstrated experience in the environmental and climate change field (e.g. climate change science, climate change adaptation practices, stakeholder and community engagement approaches, land-use planning, etc.);
  • Strong interpersonal communications skills, both written and spoken;
  • Experience writing reports and proposals;
  • The ability to multi-task;
  • The ability to thrive both as a member of several teams and independently; and
  • Relationship and network-building skills.

The Climate Services Specialist will be required to give numerous public presentations that are technical in nature to a wide variety of different groups.

These presentations, and other initiatives, will require that the Climate Services Specialist be comfortable with travel throughout Newfoundland and Labrador as well as within Atlantic Canada.

Though the Climate Services Specialist will engage regularly within their network, their work will require that they be self-motivated and are able to work with effectiveness and efficiency independently.

The Climate Services Specialist has a positive attitude and is both creative and proactive. Challenges are viewed as opportunities, and great pride is taken in helping Newfoundland and Labrador understand and address climate change.
