Habitat Stewardship Program for Species at Risk

NOTE: This opportunity has expired or is an event which has already taken place.

Now into its 17th year, the Habitat Stewardship Program (HSP) for Species at Risk supports Canadians in stewardship of the environment by providing funding for protection and conservation activities intended to benefit the habitat of species at risk.

In 2014, the HSP was strengthened such that funding became available to support projects that will proactively prevent species, other than species at risk, from becoming a conservation concern in addition to expanding the funding for species at risk. The activities must take place on private land, provincial and Crown land, or Aboriginal land, or in aquatic environments across Canada.

Funding under HSP is separated into two streams:

  • The HSP Species at Risk (SAR) Stream focuses on projects addressing the recovery of species at risk listed on Schedule 1 of the Species at Risk Act (SARA); and
  • The HSP Prevention Stream focuses on projects addressing other species, beyond those listed on SARA, to prevent them from becoming a conservation concern.

Timelines:
The program will be accepting Expressions of Interest until December 18th 2015. The submission of an Expression of Interest is strongly encouraged, particularly for applicants who have not received HSP funding in the past or for those applying to a new stream. The deadline for proposal submissions is January 15th 2016.
