Electronics Recycling Program overcharging: NDP
The NDP says the corporation in charge of electronics recycling in the province charged consumers way too much, and has failed to deliver.
The Electronic Products Recycling Association of Newfoundland and Labrador was launched in Bay Roberts over a year ago, but for the first five months of operation from July until Dec. 31, it ended with a surplus of over $860,000. Consumers are forced to pay a recycling tax on virtually all electronics including cell phones, TV’s and stereos, payable at point of purchase.
Environment and Conservation critic, George Murphy, says the program was not well thought out. He says a planned reduction in the recycling fees is not good enough. He’s taking issue with the some $600,000 the group spent on administration.
