E.D. BLOG: Preparing and succeeding in a low-carbon economy
October 1, 2018 | Written By: Kieran Hanley
With all of this focus on a “lower-carbon economy”, in the next couple of years there’s going to be some fairly rapid and substantial changes to how businesses in Newfoundland and Labrador operate in conjunction with the environment. Frankly, it can all get a bit confusing.
Here’s a quick rundown of what’s coming down the pipeline:
- There’s going to be some form of carbon pricing online by 2019;
- Within a couple of years the province’s Management of Greenhouse Gas will be coming in to effect;
- Carbon credits or carbon offsets will become more readily available; and
- Climate change resilience and greenhouse gas assessments are more frequently going to be a requirement for major projects.
What does all of this mean, and how can businesses and environmental professionals keep all of this straight? It’s hard!

A lower-carbon economy is going to give your business new variables to chew on. Are you ready?
And that’s why we’re delighted to have Ashley Smith from Fundamental Inc. and Dr. Yogendra Chaudhry from ECO Canada speak at our Newleef conference next week.
Ashley and Yogi are teaming up to break this down for us and give some insight as to how we can adapt to the evolving business climate – from strategic planning, to creating inventories, to aligning business metrics with environmental requirements towards increased efficiency. You’ll hear about some real case studies and real options for businesses to undertake, including the education and training that can help companies make the shift – ISO, EP designation, etc.
One size doesn’t fit all for NL businesses, but this session will at least help you understand (1) what you should be preparing for, (2) how you can prepare, or of probably equal importance (3) what you can ignore and tune out. Don’t miss this session at our conference… click here to view the Newleef conference website and agenda!
