A Message from NEIA’s Chair

Thank you for exploring Newfoundland and Labrador’s Clean Technology and Environmental Services Directory.

NEIA undertook the publication of this directory (1) to help inform local decision makers and procurement officials on the clean technology and environmental products and services available right here in Newfoundland and Labrador; (2) to generate greater awareness of the sector and the individual capabilities of firms within the province, nationally, and internationally through NEIA’s established channels and partnerships; and (3) to create a tool for innovators to find resources and collaborators.

As the world continues to move towards a lower carbon future, the demand for clean technologies and environmental services will grow exponentially. It is estimated that the global market for clean technologies will grow to $2.5 trillion by 2022, up from $1.1 trillion in 2012, and so the development, application, and export of clean technology presents an enormous opportunity for Newfoundland and Labrador businesses. Firms engaged in clean technology development are innovation-focused, provide attractive employment prospects for highly skilled workers, and are export-oriented. These are exactly the kinds of businesses Newfoundland and Labrador needs to grow its economy long-term.

The opportunity for economic growth is so broad because clean technology and environmental services can be developed and applied in almost any industry. Canada’s natural resource sectors have been identified as areas where we can establish a competitive advantage, and here in Newfoundland and Labrador this means opportunity within our oil and gas, aquaculture, forestry, and mining industries, among others. NEIA has engaged with stakeholders in these industries over the past year to identify where development opportunities exist, and is working to get this information to those that are inclined to use it – to entrepreneurs, intrapreneurial firms, and researchers. This is why we felt it important in this directory to include existing research and development assets in the province that can assist.

These are the initial steps to bring better definition to the sector, its capabilities, and the supporting innovation resources. While this directory will do much to promote the product and services of the sector, it is NEIA’s hope that it will also help create a stronger community of clean technology and environmental services businesses – a community that will support and collaborate with one another.

This is our first attempt at mapping our ecosystem in quite some time, and we know that it won’t be perfect. NEIA’s team has worked hard over the past year to identify and categorize firms throughout the province. If your firm has been missed, or if you have ideas on how we can improve upon this effort in the future, please share them with us and we will do our best to include them in the next iteration.

In the meantime, on behalf of NEIA I hope that you find our Clean Technology and Environmental Services Directory of value, and thank you for your hard work contributing to growth of Newfoundland and Labrador’s green economy.
