ABSTRACT
Infrastructure can pose significant challenges to the Gulf of St. Lawrence environment. Pitted against job creation maximization, environmental considerations are often minimized in the process, especially in economically challenged areas. Using case studies of the NB – PEI Confederation Bridge and the proposed Strait of Belle Isle fixed link, this presentation explores how uncertainty in ecosystem knowledge interacting with fragmented decision-making structures given multiple political jurisdictions can lead to suboptimal ecosystem outcomes. Understanding the politics of the situation is key to
mitigating such results.
