Coastal Matters Speaker Series: Celebrating an Innovative Classroom Fisheries Project

NOTE: This opportunity has expired or is an event which has already taken place.

Date: Wednesday, February 4th, 2015
Time: 12:30 to 1:30pm
Location: Library and Computing Building, Grenfell Campus (Corner Brook)

Local resource topics such as sustainable fisheries can serve as a personal way of engaging students in learning and grounding them in relationships with place and community and important events such as the moratorium. ACAP Humber Arm Invites you to join our next Coastal Matters presentation where we will hear from special guest speakers, Margaret McKeon, Education for Sustainability Resource Teacher and Outdoor Education Coordinator NL English School District: Western Region and Sonya Salyzyn, Grade 6 Teacher Humber Elementary. Ms.s McKeon and Salyzyn have titled their presentation Celebrating an Innovative Classroom Fisheries Project. An abstract for the talk can be found below.

As with all Coastal Matters presentations this session is free of charge and open to the public. Refreshments will be available. ACAP Humber Arm wishes to thank the NL Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture for ongoing support of the Coastal Matter’s Speakers Series

ABSTRACT

This presentation will overview a co-developed fisheries and sustainable food project that has been ongoing in Humber Elementary grade six classrooms over the past four years, that last year included an art opening and public show at city hall, in addition to a variety of guest speakers, a grocery store seafood counter visit, and a fish plant and boat experience in Cox’s Cove.

It will also speak more general to how to integrate a consideration of fisheries and food security issues into the school curriculum.
