BLOG: Canada’s national hydrogen strategy was just announced – so what are the opportunities for Newfoundland and Labrador?

Yesterday, the federal government announced a national hydrogen strategy for Canada. As one of the top 10 producers of hydrogen in the world (already!), Canada will benefit from the growing global demand for hydrogen — a market that is expected to reach almost $12 trillion by 2050.
Hydrogen is being touted as the fuel of the future, as it can be both produced and consumed with zero greenhouse gas emissions. It has real applications in areas of the economy that are difficult to decarbonize, like resources extraction, transportation, power generation, and manufacturing. And there are significant opportunities for those that can supply it. As such, jurisdictions around the world are aggressively pursuing hydrogen agendas.

Where are the opportunities for Newfoundland and Labrador in all of this? The fact is – they could be substantial.
As part of our Newleef 2020 conference, join NEIA’s Executive Director Kieran Hanley as he gives the 101 on hydrogen and begins a provincial discussion on what the possibilities are for this province related to it. Also, hear from Growler Energy and their Icelandic partner Landsvirkjun Power on a hydro-powered hydrogen pilot project near Reykjavík that may provide interesting insights for Newfoundland and Labrador.
