March 24, 2015
The Department of Advanced Education and Skills is now accepting applications for this year’s summer student employment programs. Private employers and not-for-profit groups throughout the province are able to avail of a wage subsidy under these programs to help them hire post-secondary and high school students for the summer months.
“Summer employment is usually the first exposure young people have to the labour market and it is great way for them to build and increase their confidence and learn about workplace responsibility. Though these opportunities they are able to gain valuable lifelong work skills that will assist them in gaining future employment.”
– The Honourable Clyde Jackman, Minister of Advanced Education and Skills
Through funding of approximately $3.3 million by the Provincial Government, the summer student employment programs are delivered by the department’s 27 employment centres located throughout the province. Representing a 20 per cent increase from 2013, 1,855 students were hired through these programs in 2014.
“The summer student employment programs are part of our government’s continued commitment to create job opportunities for youth in communities throughout the province. We want to help ensure that Newfoundland and Labrador continues to be the province of choice for our youth where they can live, work, and raise their families.”
– Minister Jackman
