15th International Workshop on Atmospheric Icing of Structures, September 8-13, 2013, St. John’s, NL
NOTE: This opportunity has expired or is an event which has already taken place.

Compusult heartily welcomes you to IWAIS 2013, the first one to be held in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. IWAIS 2013 will take place at the Sheraton Hotel Newfoundland from September 8-11, 2013, with some optional days for site visits after the workshop sessions.
IWAIS has previously been held in Canada, but never in Newfoundland and Labrador. Newfoundland and Labrador has one of the most significant icing climates in the world. For example, there have been major atmospheric icing (freezing precipitation) events in St. John’s in March 1958 and April 1984. And many fishing and other vessels throughout history have had to deal with severe marine icing situations off our coasts.
The province of Newfoundland and Labrador lies between the 46th and 61st parallels with the bulk of the island portion being below the 50th parallel. The island is located in the Gulf of St. Lawrence and the larger Labrador portion is on the eastern part of the Canadian mainland. Newfoundland and Labrador is Canada’s most easterly province and its newest, having joined Confederation in 1949.
The weather in Newfoundland and Labrador ranges from mildly surprising to completely unpredictable, but is generally quite enjoyable during the month of September. Fall is hiking season in Newfoundland and Labrador. Golf courses are still in full swing and people continue to visit the National Parks, including the Signal Hill National Historic Site which lies within the City of St. John’s and is within walking distance of the Sheraton Hotel Newfoundland.
