Thinking Globally and Acting Locally – One piece of metal at a time.

June 27, 2017 | Written By: Matt Rumboldt

NEIA member Newco Metals and Auto Recycling is proving that Newfoundland and Labrador has the capability of keeping their services local.

Innovations within Newco Metal has given them the opportunity to keep services, once only handled outside the province, at a local level to not only boost the economy but provide a further sense of sustainability within their business model. Newco Metal has grown to incorporate many different aspects of metal recycling that includes contruction, towing, fencing and automobiles. They have worked on many major projects, such as dismantling the Placentia Bridge. Newco has grown in it’s over 30 year history, proudly, without the support of any government funding and bases its success on a combination of people who understood the business and the vision of where to take the company.

In April of this year, Newco Metal acquired ownership of K&J Metals in Stephenville, which will mean a higher number of jobs created in this region and gives them a new access point for exporting their products to Canada’s mainland and other steel companies world-wide. Newco Metal has hired three existing permanent staff from K&J Metals and are training them in their expert methodology and how to operate. When the facility is fully up and running, under Newco Metals ownership, they expect to have upwards of 10 permanent workers in Stephenville. In addition to this new acquisition, Newco has operations in St. John’s, Argentia, Foxtrap, Corner Brook and Happy Valley Goose Bay. Newco hopes to work with the Port of Stephenville, as the port offers an ideal location for shipping many tonnes of metals to markets in foreign areas.

The goal is to keep jobs here, employ local people in order to reduce the carbon footprint – all to address market needs and become a successful operation in the area without having to bring people in or send materials out for processing.
