Seminar on Design of Hydraulic Structures – May 25, 2019

Seminar Objectives

The seminar is intended for the generalist civil engineer interested in enhancing his/her skills in the design of hydraulic structures. The course links theory and practice and provides sources of reliable design information. The seminar content is based on a course at McGill University offered to senior year and masters students in civil engineering as well as practising engineers. The focus is on open channel flow. A comprehensive package of notes will be provided as well as a set of solved examples and challenge questions.

Seminar Leader: Phil Helwig, M.Eng, M.ASCE, P. Eng.

Phil Helwig has 47 years of experience as a hydro-technical engineer in the areas of hydropower, dam safety, river engineering, eco-hydraulics, education and related areas. Notable accomplishments:

  • Layout, optimization, and hydraulic design of seven major hydro projects, two small hydro projects and three rehabilitation-upgrading projects in Newfoundland, Quebec, N.W.T., and Nepal.
  • Design of the Cat Arm Hydro unlined power tunnel and bathtub spillway.
  • Design of the Hinds Lake Power Canal lining an innovative approach based on self-armouring.
  • Designer of Paradise River concrete arch dam.
  • Granite Canal Hydro (NL): hydraulic design compensation channel (artificial river channel).
  • Rupert River Diversion (Quebec) design studies on level control weirs to mitigate the effects of upstream diversion of the river.
  • Exploits Dam Fishway, largest in Atlantic Canada.

Fees:
Practicing engineers: $250 including HST
