Provincial government seeking input on proposed Canadian retaliation to US tariffs

Last week the United States imposed tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum exports. In response to these tariffs, the Government of Canada announced retaliatory measures against steel, aluminum and other products imported from the United States worth $16.6 billion. (https://www.canada.ca/en/global-affairs/news/2018/05/address-by-the-honourable-chrystia-freeland-minister-of-foreign-affairs-on-steel-and-aluminum-tariffs-imposed-by-the-united-states.html)

The range of goods that these tariffs will apply to is broad and includes various steel and aluminum products, and other commodities such as washing machines and whisky. The full list of goods subject to retaliatory tariffs can be found at the following link: https://www.fin.gc.ca/activty/consult/cacsap-cmpcaa-eng.asp.

Currently, there is a 15-day consultation period where the Federal Government is seeking feedback from stakeholders, industry and Provinces and Territories (click here). These tariffs will not take effect until July 1, 2018.

Firms in Newfoundland and Labrador are invited to provide the Government of Canada with their feedback. Further, the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador would also appreciate your feedback so that it may work on your behalf in its discussions. Feedback can be sent via email to AVickers@gov.nl.ca and MPuddicombe@gov.nl.ca by COB June 11, 2018.
