Provide your feedback to the Government of Canada’s new Impact Assessment Act

NOTE: This opportunity has expired or is an event which has already taken place.

The Government of Canada is committed to putting in place better rules for major projects that protect the environment, respect Indigenous rights, and strengthen our economy.

The Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency is seeking public comments to help inform the approach to developing two regulations to support the government’s proposed new Impact Assessment Act. We are interested in your views on the proposed approaches and would welcome comments on or before June 1 2018.

The Regulations Designating Physical Activities, also known as the Project List, identify projects that would be subject to the Impact Assessment Act. A revised Project List will aim to make it clear when the new rules will apply, providing certainty that Canadians and companies need and expect. We are looking for Canadians to tell us what criteria should be used to revise the list.

The Information Requirements and Time Management Regulations would set out the information that a project proponent is required to provide at the beginning of an impact assessment so that potentially affected Indigenous groups, communities, and others can understand what the proposed project involves and whether it could affect them. This information is also intended to support planning for a timely and efficient assessment process.

The regulations would also set out clear criteria under which the legislated timelines for an impact assessment could be suspended to stop the clock. The feedback gathered will inform development of the regulations.
