NEIA launches new course to help businesses in NL adapt and succeed in the lower-carbon economy

For Immediate Release
November 30, 2018

The Newfoundland and Labrador Environmental Industry Association (NEIA) has launched a new training course to help businesses in the province understand and prepare to succeed in the lower-carbon economy.

“As of January 2019, Newfoundland and Labrador will have in place mechanisms that put a price on greenhouse gas emissions,” says Kieran Hanley, NEIA’s Executive Director. “This will mean a different kind of cost for businesses, and a cost that will increase annually at least up to 2022. Additionally, we expect that as Muskrat Falls comes online there will be some form of increase in electricity prices.”

But Hanley says that while these new costs will present challenges for the private sector, there will also be opportunity for businesses to avoid them and get a leg up on the competition. “Businesses can make changes to their operations to reduce their emissions and lower costs – but first they need to understand where these costs are coming from.”

“In taking this course, businesses will learn about the relationship between energy and carbon, and be given simple tools to help them assess their carbon footprint and plan for cost savings.” But the training goes well beyond simply the transfer of information, says Hanley. “The course includes a 1-on-1 component where the trainer will conduct a site visit with each participant to understand the specific challenges their business faces, including recommendations on where they might want to investigate further to achieve cost savings.”

Hanley says that the pressure to reduce greenhouse gas emissions is international in scale, and is likely to be a fixture in the global economy for many years to come. “In Newfoundland and Labrador, we are going to be hearing more and more about carbon taxes, performance standards, carbon offsets, etc… not to mention the variety of supports and programs that will be available to help the private sector adjust.”

“This course will help businesses understand quite practically what these things mean, how they might impact operations, and most importantly what they can do to succeed in this emerging lower-carbon economy.”

Hanley says that the unique nature of Newfoundland and Labrador’s carbon footprint, and the custom framework developed by the provincial government to price emissions, means that solutions popular in other provinces may not necessarily be applicable in this one. “The manner in which businesses create emissions and use energy is different here, and that’s why a local solution like this course will provide great value to the local private sector.”

The first delivery of the course is taking place on February 15th in St. John’s, NL. More information can be found here.
