NEIA issues challenge to Newfoundland and Labrador businesses to help offset 5,000 tonnes of the province’s greenhouse gas emissions

For Immediate Release
October 23, 2019

ST. JOHN’S (NL) – The Newfoundland and Labrador Environmental Industry Association (NEIA) is issuing a challenge to business to help offset 5,000 tonnes of the province’s greenhouse gas emissions.

“We are challenging firms across the province to recognize their own contributions to climate change, and to support clean growth in Newfoundland and Labrador,” says Kieran Hanley, NEIA’s Executive Director.

“All companies have a social responsibility to take care of the environment,” says Joshua Green, CEO for Mysa Smart Thermostats – the province’s first company to become carbon neutral through purchasing offsets. Green says he notices customers and clients are expecting more from business in this regard. “Not only do they want you to provide products and services to them, but they also want you to do it in an environmentally friendly manner”.

Hanley says the process to estimate greenhouse gas emissions and purchase offsets can be simple, with instructions found on the challenge’s website at www.carbonoffsetchallenge.ca. “The offsets are special in that they are the first ever to be generated, verified, certified, and sold from within Newfoundland and Labrador,” says Hanley, noting that 50% of the proceeds from the transactions go directly to the municipalities that helped generate them.

Hanley says that the website at www.carbonoffsetchallenge.ca will be used to track offsets and tell the positive stories of businesses that decide to take part in the challenge.

NEIA is a not-for-profit association of businesses that promotes the development of clean technology and the growth of the green economy in Newfoundland and Labrador. NEIA has over 200 members. More information can be found at http://www.neia.org.
