The provincial government has appointed an environmental assessment committee for a proposed spill detection and testing facility on the Northern Peninsula.

Fugro GeoSurveys is proposing to develop an oil spill detection and testing facility in the Eddies Cove area.

The proposed facility will cover a 1.9 hectare area, and involve the construction of a temporary, lined containment basin, including a helicopter landing pad and temporary trailers.

The basin will be filled with seawater, which will simulate various ice-sea conditions, and be injected with crude oil for testing of the EFNMR system.

The seawater will be treated and drained and the containment basin decommissioned.
