What’s ahead for the Atlantic economy in 2018?

As part of this year’s Outlook conferences November 6-10, APEC’s Director of Research, David Chaundy, will take a closer look at the key factors underlying Atlantic Canada’s economic performance and explain what they mean for the region’s economic outlook for 2018.

  • The Atlantic provinces have shown divergent patterns of economic activity in 2017. Prince Edward Island is experiencing rapid growth, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick are growing, but slower than the national pace, while Newfoundland and Labrador is contracting. Will this pattern continue into 2018?
  • Canada is growing at its fastest pace since its recovery from the 2008/2009 recession. Can it maintain this rapid growth next year, and what will it mean for further increases in interest rates?
  • With fiscal restraint acting as a mild drag on growth, and major project investment tapering off, will consumers be able to sustain economic growth in the Maritime provinces?
  • Will oil production from the new Hebron field be enough to offset the impact of declining major project investment in Newfoundland and Labrador?
  • Where are the best global prospects for Atlantic firms?
  • How important are trade agreements such as NAFTA and CETA for Atlantic Canadian exports?
